Frequently asked questions
Short answers to common questions. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
What is the difference between leasing and buying?
When you buy, you own the car. When you lease, the leasing company owns it and you pay to use it for an agreed term and distance.
What is the Restwert?
The Restwert is the residual value: what the contract assumes the car will be worth at the end. A higher Restwert means lower monthly rates.
What happens if I drive more than the Kilometerlimit?
Extra kilometres are normally charged per kilometre when you return the car. The price per kilometre is stated in your Leasingvertrag.
Do I need a down payment?
Not always. A down payment lowers the monthly rate, but it is money you do not get back, so compare offers with and without one.
Do I have to insure the car?
Yes. You need insurance to drive, and leasing contracts usually require comprehensive insurance (Vollkasko). Check what your contract asks for.
Can I end the lease early?
Often it is possible, but it can cost money. The contract describes the terms, so read that section before you sign.
What can I do at the end of the lease?
Usually you can return the car, buy it for the Restwert, or begin a new lease.
Is the calculator on this site an offer?
No. It is an example with a simplified formula. This whole site is a demonstration.
